Paint Your Own Oasis

For a girl who had never stepped out of her small town in arid desert, it was but natural to be spellbound by the place she had visited now. For it was so full of things that she had seen only in books and movies. There were flowers and lush green grass, trees laden with blossoms and ripe fruits that one could simply pluck, wash and eat. And there were birds and bees making the most of this bounty of nature.

She was thankful to her Facebook friend who had invited her to this heaven.  But once back home, such was the gloom that descended upon her that a desert-fairy appeared from the middle of scorching sands, and granted a wish, “Once a week, use your skill…Your wishes be at your will” . Thus saying the fairy vanished.

Confused though she was, the only skill she knew she had was painting. So painting she did – of flowers and fruits, trees and waterfalls – till it became a real garden. Years gone, her magical brush has been painting a weekly oasis that has stopped many of her fellow natives from migrating to greener pastures.

  1. I love this fairy tale! I love the fairy visiting her and saying, “Once a week, use your skill…your wishes be at your will.” I think it is wonderful she was able to paint a “real” beautiful garden, I’m sure it more beautiful than the one she visited. Excellent story Alka! Thank you for participating in Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers Challenge!

    • Thank you so much! After writing my previous story on this prompt, based on ‘age-groups’ I felt like writing something simple and positive. What this fairy said had a double meaning. And yes the garden she created was more beautiful because it was badly needed by her town people, and she served their needs.

  2. Nothing like a good dose of Fairytale 🙂 . I love how the fairy helped her to achieve her happiness and to spread it amongst her people through painting. I found your take on this prompt creative! 🙂
